Longmen Grottoes in central China has been fully covered by 5G, the first tourist attraction in Henan Province to offer the next-generation technology service, according to the local administrative committee.
A strategic cooperation agreement of "5G+Smart Longmen" was signed between the committee and the branch of China Mobile in the city of Luoyang on July 24.
Seventeen 5G bases were built within 22 days and the peak internet speed can reach a staggering 1.16 gigabytes per second, the committee said.
The grottoes receive up to 75,000 visitors each day. The 5G coverage is expected to provide a better internet experience for tourists and lay the foundation for smart tourism as well as safety management in Longmen, the committee said. In the future, people can even be able to tour around the site and admire the Buddhist statues from home via VR or AR applications.
Longmen Grottoes is home to 2,300 grottoes with 110,000 Buddhist figures and images, over 80 dagobas and 2,800 inscribed tablets created between the Northern Wei (386-534) and the Song (960-1279) dynasties.
