Chinese telecom giant Huawei welcomes even more game developers and partners to join its native HarmonyOS Next operating system, looking to empower them with advanced technologies and offer users the ultimate gaming experience, as well as to together build an open, innovative and mutually beneficial operation system, said a senior executive on Thursday at the China Digital Entertainment Congress 2024 in Shanghai.

HarmonyOS, or Hongmeng in Chinese, is an open-source operating system developed by Huawei for various devices and scenarios, including intelligent screens, tablets, wearable devices and cars. Earlier in June, Huawei launched the new HarmonyOS Next beta version at the Huawei Developer Conference 2024.

"With the HarmonyOS Next operating system, we hope to offer developers native and ultimate user experiences with a native system that is easy to use, smooth, safe, smart and connected," said Howard Wu, CEO of Huawei Interactive Media Team, and president of Interactive Media BU at Huawei Consumer Cloud Service.

Wu noted that HarmonyOS has engaged 2.54 million developers, and over 900 million devices now run on the operating system. More than 5,000 apps have started development to adapt to this native system, covering 18 sectors including gaming and life services.

He further explained that developers can make their games connect to millions of Huawei devices and users with one effort, and its technologies can help reduce their time for development by over 80 percent.

From January to May, Huawei saw shipments of its flagship mobile phones surge 72 percent year-on-year, according to Wu.

"In the gaming industry, how developers see us is critical. Together with more developers and partners, we aim to build an operating system that can compete on the global stage, and to better promote the development of the gaming industry," said Wu.
