A man was fined 1,000 yuan ($162) for smoking on a Beijing-Tianjin high-speed train. This is the first fine that Beijing railway police have enforced on a passenger for smoking on a bullet train, the Beijing News reported.

According to the police, a passenger surnamed Liu smoked in a lavatory on the train and triggered the smoke alarm. The train driver had to slow the train down as a result. Liu's behavior caused a late arrival and thus was fined according to the regulations on railway safety.

Police reminds passengers that smoking is banned on all high-speed trains, and people who violate this rule will receive a 500 to 2,000 yuan fine.
