The Hong Kong Customs smashed a drug distribution syndicate and seized about 131 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds with an estimated market value of 21.5 million HK dollars (about 2.8 million U.S. dollars), it said Tuesday.
This is a record high in quantity for a seizure of cannabis buds by the Hong Kong Customs in the past decade, it said.
A logistics company located in an industrial building in Tsuen Wan was raided during an operation last Saturday.
Customs officers found a sea-based consignment from North America declared as personal effects in the company.
Upon examination, about 131 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds were seized.
Three local men who went to collect the consignment on Monday were arrested.
Under Hong Kong's Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of 5 million HK dollars and life imprisonment.
