The Red Cross Society of China has made a cash donation of 50,000 U.S. dollars to help Vietnam's northwestern communities affected by recent floods and landslides.

Charge D'affaires of the Chinese Embassy to Vietnam Yin Haihong handed over the sum to the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) in Hanoi on Wednesday.

The aid aims at providing more sources to support Vietnamese in northwestern regions to overcome consequences of flooding, expressing sympathies of the Chinese people over the losses and difficulties faced by the Vietnamese people, said Yin at the ceremony.

Chinese and Vietnamese peoples are willing to provide each other with assistance for relief whenever disasters strike, said Yin, expressing the hope that the support will deepen the long-lasting friendship between the two countries.

Receiving the donation, President of VRCS Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu expressed sincere gratitude to the Red Cross Society of China and the Chinese embassy to Vietnam, saying the precious donation will help the Vietnamese people go through difficulties soon.

"The aid shall be transferred to the victims as soon as possible and in most effective ways," Thu pledged.

In late July, severe floods and landslides hit Vietnam's northwest provinces, killing 29, injuring 28, leaving 16 missing and damaging thousands of houses.

Total economic loss by far has surpassed 1.2 trillion Vietnamese dong (53.1 million U.S. dollars), estimated the VRCS.

In 2016, the Red Cross Society of China offered 200,000 U.S. dollars to Vietnamese flood victims in central regions.

It also provided 50,000 U.S. dollars for residents hit by drought and saline intrusion in Vietnam's Central Highlands and Mekong Delta.

The organization also presented another 700,000 Chinese yuan (100,000 U.S. dollars) in 2016 to help enhance Vietnam's capacity of coping with disasters.
