A man surnamed Zhu who was accused of murdering his wife (surnamed Yang) and freezing her body in a refrigerator for about three months, is currently on trial at Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court, Xinmin Evening News reported Wednesday.
A point of dispute is whether Zhu turned himself in to the police or not, which could gain him leniency in sentencing. According to Zhu, during a trip to Hangzhou in 2016, the couple quarreled. After returning home, Yang continued to complain. Zhu then squeezed her throat until she suffocated to death.
Zhu stored her in their refrigerator, then used Yang's mobile phone to send text messages to her family and friends so as to not arouse suspicion.
He later transferred approximately 30,000 yuan ($4,547.79) from Yang's bank account into his own, and charged 100,000 yuan to her credit card. Zhu used Yang's ID to book a hotel to sleep with women.
In February, Zhu confessed his crime to the police, as he was unable to keep up the charade.
