Generally, women's restrooms are better equipped for parents' needs and more likely to have a diaper changing table than men's. But New York City is set to change that.
The New York City Council on Monday approved a bill requiring all new public restrooms to install changing tables in both men's and women's washrooms, the Huffington Post reported. Older buildings with no such facilities will have to install them during future renovation.
New York City is the first major U.S. city to pass such legislation.
The bill was proposed by New York City Council member Rafael Espinal, who was shocked when he saw a dad leaning over a bathroom sink changing his baby's diaper. He called the scene "terrible".
The bill is intended to allow dads to change their children's diapers "with a little more dignity" in a sanitary space, as he put it.
