Shanghai Public Security has released the results of its crackdown on telecommunications and online fraud, Laodong Daily reported Wednesday.
Statistics show that, as of November, the number of fraud cases received by authorities decreased 20 percent year-on-year, while the amount of money involved decreased 5.5 percent. A total 149 million yuan ($22.52 million) in potential losses was saved.
According to an officer with the authority, Shanghai Telecommunications and Online Fraud Squad makes 600 to 800 calls every day to alert residents that they might be being swindled.
Telecom and online fraud gangs must continuously upgrade their tricks to stay ahead of authorities. But some lax online service providers facilitate fraud by not upgrading their security technology.
