A plane chartered by the government of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh crashed in Mumbai on Thursday, aviation sources said.

The plane, a Beechcraft King Air C90 turboprop, crashed in an open area adjacent to an under-construction building in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area and burst into flames while it was about to land, sources said.

Local TV channels quoted a lawmaker of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party Kirit Somaiya as reporting that "pilots are still inside the plane".

"One pedestrian has died in the incident," he told the media.

Several fire engines have been pressed into service to douse the flames, a senior fire brigade official said.

The crash came a day after an Indian Air Force fighter jet crashed in the state. Fortunately, two pilots on board managed to eject safely.
