Four people died, one was severely injured and 12 remained in hospital under observation after a car lost control and crashed into vehicles and pedestrians in downtown Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang Province, on Monday night, Hangzhou police said.
The accident happened at 7:06 pm when a female driver, surnamed Chen, lost control of the vehicle after crossing the intersection of Jingzhou Road and Wen'erxi Road.
According to chinanews.cn, witnesses said they heard a loud bang. Zhou Yangping, who works in a fruit shop near the accident site, said he saw debris flying in the air after the accident, and guard rails were crushed into pieces.
Another witness surnamed Jin said a car stopped in the middle of the road and two rear tires went flying 200-300 meters away.
Police said tests showed the driver was not driving under the influence of alcohol and drug.
The car involved in the accident has been sent for examination by a third party.
The driver is undergoing treatment in hospital under police surveillance.
