Over 120 participants attended a meeting in Beijing on Monday to commemorate this year's World Ozone Day, also known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which falls annually on Sept. 16.
China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the United Nations Environment Program co-hosted the meeting.
A Chinese official said that China highly values The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and has been carefully carrying out the protocol since the country joined it in 1991.
According to him, China has eliminated some 280,000 tonnes of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) since then. That accounts for over half the elimination of ODS by developing countries.
The official said that China mainly conducts its own regulations on import and exports of the Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) through total quality control and quota license management.
So far, 31 elimination and substitution programs have been carried out in over 1,000 chemical plants and refrigeration companies.
In July, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment deployed a nationwide special campaign against the ODS misconducts, and the results will be released when it concludes.
The official said that China always holds zero tolerance on illegal production and use of ODS, and vows to closely work with all contracting parties to make sure the goals of the protocol are achieved as scheduled.
The theme for the World Ozone Day 2018 is “Keep Cool and Carry On: The Montreal Protocol”, and it hopes to raise awareness and bring attention to the depletion of the ozone layer.
