Illuminated crosswalks are the latest lights to shine on the Shanghai streets as part of a new system to keep jaywalkers in line, China News Service reported on Tuesday.
Located near the city's famous Bund on Nanjing East Road, the lighting system includes LED lights embedded into the pavement on both sides that light up the crosswalk like a runway.
The lights turn red and green in sync with the traffic lights to alert pedestrians and remind drivers to brake for them. Guide columns also are installed to keep people on the right path.
Shanghai police said the illuminated zebra crossing is one of a few installed around the city as part of an initiative to boost road safety.
Social media lit up over the idea, with some commenting this will be especially helpful for people who walk while looking down at their smartphones.
