Yang Guoqiang, the chairman of the Guangdong Guoqiang Public Welfare Foundation and an alumni of Tsinghua University, said that as an entrepreneur who grew up in a peasant family, he feels honored to contribute to society and support the development of education. He also said he was very happy to donate to Tsinghua University and do something to support the development of talent and innovation.
The 2.2 billion yuan donation is the largest ever received by a university in China, according to Qiu Yong, the vice president of Tsinghua University. He said it has a special significance for both China and for the university. According to Qiu, patriotic dedication and the pursuit of excellence are part of the spirit of the university, and he called on universities to take the initiative to serve the country as the leading force in basic research and a source of major technological breakthroughs.
