Special: Battle Against Novel Coronavirus

The total number of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection cases in Taiwan has increased by two to 34, according to the island's epidemic monitoring agency Friday.

One new patient is a man in his 30s living in northern Taiwan who was suspected of being infected during his trip to Osaka of Japan from Feb. 17 to 22. He showed symptoms of cough and throat irritation on Feb. 25 on his return and sought medical treatment the next day, the agency said in a press release.

Another patient, a woman in her 50s also living in northern Taiwan, has been hospitalized since Feb. 14 for low blood sugar and reported no respiratory symptoms at the time. She began to develop a cough and fever on Feb. 21 while staying in the hospital, the statement said.

Since she has not left Taiwan recently, the authorities believe that she was infected locally, the statement said, adding that she had largely stayed at home and her family members living with her had not reported suspected symptoms.

As of Thursday, the island had 23 suspected cases under quarantine. Among the confirmed cases, nine have recovered while one died.
