Sin Ka-ho, a 22-year-old man, was sentenced to four years in prison for rioting by a Hong Kong court on Friday.
Sin was reported to be the first person sentenced for rioting in the social unrest last year in Hong Kong.
Sin was prosecuted for participating in a riot with others outside the complex of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Legislative Council on June 12, 2019, when he charged the police cordon line by throwing umbrellas, helmets and other objects.
When the police fired tear gas, Sin did not retreat but continued hurling objects at the police. He was later arrested and he pleaded guilty to a riot charge in court on May 4.
During the riot on June 12, 2019, rioters blocked main roads and charged police cordon lines using bricks, steel bars and other objects as weapons. A total of 11 people were arrested and several policemen were injured in the violence.
