The Lebanese army on Thursday said it had found some 4.35 tonnes of ammonium nitrate near the entrance to Beirut port, the site of a huge explosion last month.

A report by Reuters say engineers from the Lebanese army were dealing with the ammonium nitrate.

At least 190 people were killed and more than 6,500 others injured in the August 4 explosion which shattered the port region stretching for kilometers. Authorities said the blast appeared to have been caused by a fire igniting 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate left unsecured in a warehouse for six years.

The furious public believed that it was the government's negligence that led to the disaster and called for the ousting of the political elite.

Facing pressure from all sides, Lebanon's government resigned on 10 August.
