Two New York City police officers have been disciplined after a viral video showed them ejecting a masked subway rider who purportedly hassled them over not wearing masks, according to the city's police department on Wednesday.
In the video clip, two unmasked police officers removed the commuter from a subway station, telling him that he was being disruptive after he asked the officers to put on masks.
New York City Department Commissioner Dermot Shea called the officers' behavior "absolutely inexcusable" when providing update on the incident that happended in the city on Tuesday morning.
"There's discipline imposed, and we expect that discipline to be meted out," he said, "there is no excuse for what I saw in that video."
In a news conference on Wednesday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that he was "troubled" by that video.
"I saw the officers not wearing their masks in the subway. That's evident, that's unacceptable," he said, "if you're going to be in law enforcement, you actually have to participate in following the law."
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), responsible for public transportation in the New York City metropolitan area, requires masks to be worn inside subway stations and on trains, and the Police Department requires officers to wear face coverings in public transit settings.
