Police in Jiangyin city, Jiangsu province, has detained a man who was allegedly helping to close a baby trafficking deal, according to a statement released on Sunday evening.
It said the police received a tipoff from the public at 9:54 am on Sunday and immediately started the investigation. The police later detained a 22-year-old man surnamed Su who has confessed to the act of being an intermediary of the baby trafficking deal.
According to the police, an 18-year-old girl surnamed Li who works in Jiangyin gave birth to a son on Oct 6, and decided to give him away because she couldn't take care of him. She then asked her brother-in-law to help her find people who can adopt the baby by posting adoption information online.
Su then noticed the post and later contacted a couple from elsewhere. They then decided to close the deal on Saturday evening. The couple was also detained later and the baby was rescued, the statement said.
The case was believed to be exposed by Shangguan Zhengyi, an anti-trafficking volunteer who was at the scene of the transaction. Shangguan decided to follow Su because he was approached by Su online after disguising as a buyer, according to Jimu News.
At the scene, Shangguan gathered evidence of the exchange of baby and money with undercover reporters and reported the case to the police, according to the report.
The police security departments always maintain a "zero tolerance" attitude towards illegal and criminal acts that infringe upon the rights and interests of women and children. They will resolutely crack down such activities in accordance with the law, and firmly safeguard the life and safety of women and children, the statement said.
