Ministry plans to approve 14 new higher education institutions

The Ministry of Education announced on Monday its plan to approve the establishment of 14 new undergraduate higher education institutions, including one private university.

Fuyao University of Science and Technology in Fuzhou, Fujian province, is the only private institution among the 14 schools awaiting approval.

The university was established with the support of the Heren Charitable Foundation, founded by philanthropist Cao Dewang, and in partnership with the government of Fuzhou, according to its official website.

The foundation has invested an initial 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) to launch the institution, which aims to focus on engineering and applied sciences.

The university plans to open four undergraduate majors, including Materials Science and Engineering and Computer Science and Technology, it said.

During the annual meeting of the Fuyao Group, university president Wang Shuguo confirmed plans to begin admissions in 2025, according to The-Paper.cn.

Other institutions awaiting approval includes University of Science and Technology in Beijing and Jiuquan Vocational Technical College in Gansu province.

The announcement was released on the ministry's official website, which invites public comments until Jan 17.
