Eight high school students from China's Hong Kong gained three gold, one silver, two bronze medals and two honorable mentions at the 16th Asian Physics Olympiad, Hong Kong's best ever result at the event, according to the government website on Tuesday.

The competition was held from May 3 to 11 in China's Hangzhou with 190 contestants from 25 countries and regions.

Hong Kong's Secretary for Education Eddie Ng congratulated the winners, saying the good result marked the success of collaboration between the Academy for Gifted Education, Education Bureau and local universities.

"To nurture diversified talents in the science and technology fields with a view to enhancing the international competitiveness of Hong Kong, we are strengthening science, technology and mathematics education," he said.

The Hong Kong contestants were trainees under the Physics Enhancement Program at universities and commissioned by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education. They were selected to take part in a series of enhancement courses before competing in the olympiad.

The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Physics Department will host the next olympiad in Hong Kong in May 2016.
