China saw a significant increase in train travel as millions of Chinese people traveled during Golden Week, the National Day holiday, according to official data on Saturday.

From September 28 to October 7, 108.34 million passengers made train journeys, up 9.7 percent year on year, according to the China Railway Corporation.

On October 1, 14.42 million train journeys were made, the highest number of journeys made on a single day during the holiday period.

Eight railway bureaus, including Zhengzhou, Jinan and Shanghai, reported passenger increases of over 10 percent.

During the 10-day travel rush, railway authorities put an extra 1,000 trains in service to cope with the surging demand, including about 800 high-speed bullet trains.

Bullet trains transported 54.09 million passengers during the holiday period, an increase of 24.6 percent year on year.
