About 80 million Chinese are expected to travel over the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival holiday, official data showed Thursday.
The domestic tourism sector could take 33 billion yuan (4.8 billion U.S. dollars) during the three-day holiday from May 28 to May 30, according to data from the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA).
A CNTA survey showed that excursions to suburban areas would be the most popular choice for most Chinese travellers.
The cities of Xi'an, Chengdu, Suzhou and Guilin are the top popular destinations for domestic trips, while Phuket Island, Okinawa and Maldives are the top choices for overseas trips.
The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of a year according to the Chinese calendar. Traditions on the holiday include racing dragon boats and eating Zongzi, glutinous rice and fillings wrapped with bamboo or reed leaves.
