The mountain park near the DPRK's border was closed because of a minor landslide, according to a note posted by the information office of the Northeast China's Jilin Province.
"The temporary closure of the south scenic spot of the Changbai Mountain has drawn the attention of visitors and netizens, so we would like to clarify … it was temporarily closed because a minor landslide Wednesday afternoon," according to the Sina Weibo account of the Jilin government information office on Thursday.
The north and west scenic spots continue to be open to the public, the post said.
The note was originally posted by the Weibo account of the Changbai Mountain scenic site at 1 a.m. Thursday.
The Weibo post was then deleted, but several photos were later posted of employees cleaning the mountainside.
"To ensure the safety and comfort of visitors, our staff is conducting a comprehensive safety inspection of the Changbai mountain south scenic spot, which we have temporarily closed to the public," a notice read on the Sina Weibo account of the Jilin Provincial Tourism Development Committee Wednesday night. It won't be opened until potential hazards are removed.
Changbai Mountain is located on the border between China and DPRK and is considered the most famous mountain in Northeast China, the Xinhua News Agency reported. The park is usually popular in winter and rarely closes during the season. DPRK conducted a nuclear test on September 3. Jilin Province residents said they were rattled by the nuclear test-triggered earthquake. China's Ministry of Environmental Protection started monitoring the environment of its northeast border regions after the test, but found that "radiation levels were normal."
