Universal Studios Beijing is scheduled to open in the spring of 2021, local authorities said recently.
Officially named Universal Beijing Resort, the park will be supplemented with two hotels and a shopping center, according to an announcement made by the government of Tongzhou district, where the theme park will be located, through its official WeChat account in early March.
The first phase of the project will cover a total area of 1.6 square kilometers, with an investment of 46 billion yuan ($6.8 billion). Construction of the project's first phase will conclude by October 2020.
Upon opening, the theme park will become the largest Universal Studios outlet in Asia. The annual number of visitors is estimated to exceed 3 million, according to the park's official website.
Public bidding on some of its recreational facilities, like boat ride, the carousel, and roller coaster, kicked off in February, according to a statement released on the website of the municipality's public resources trading platform.
Sharing the same district with Beijing's subsidiary administrative center - both in the capital's east Tongzhou - the theme park has drawn wide public attention after its detailed development plan was released in 2015.
