The 2016 Beijing Auto Show started on Monday and will run through May 4th. The exhibition is one of the leading shows in China. It takes place bi-annually in Beijing and alternates every second year with the Shanghai Motor Show.
China is now officially the world's biggest single new car market. Twenty-five percent of all vehicles built in 2015 were purchased by Chinese customers.
Analysts expect this year's exhibition to help set trends for the auto industry as China's tastes are beginning to shape styles well beyond the country's borders.
This year's show has attracted over 16,000 exhibitors from 14 countries and regions world wide. A total of about 12,000 car models are on display. Nearly 150 are new energy cars, that's more than 12%.
Meanwhile the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers report that in the first quarter this year, the output and sales of new energy vehicles doubled from a year earlier. More than 60,000 such vehicles were produced, and over 58 thousand sold.
According to a survey conducted by 91survey-dot-com, electric car brands like BYD Auto, Venucia, and DENZA gained great popularity in China last year.
The American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors say its current sales in China have increased 3 times compared to a year ago.
