Hung Hsiu-chu, the leader of Taiwan's Kuomintang Party, is set to pay a five-day visit to the Chinese Mainland starting on Sunday. It will be Hung's first visit to the mainland since becoming head of the Kuomintang Party in March.
On November 2nd, Hung will attend the Cross-Strait Trade, Economy and Culture Forum, which has played an important role and generated fruitful results since it was established a decade ago.
The spokesperson for China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, An Fengshan, said on Wednesday that a meeting will be significant for safeguarding the peaceful development of cross-strait relations. Leaders of both the Communist Party of China and the KMT Party are set to meet. The spokesperson also said that both parties will maintain communication and adhere to the 1992 Consensus, which affirms the one-China policy and opposes "Taiwan independence".
"Under the current situation, the high-level interactions between the two parties, and the efforts to consolidate a common political foundation, will have a positive impact on maintaining cross-Strait peace and stability," An said.
