China has asked for calm in the region, adding that measures should be taken to avoid any further escalations of violence. The Chinese foreign ministry said that China's sovereignty should not be compromised, nor should the lives and property of its people living in the border area. It also stressed that China is willing to play a constructive role in forging a peaceful solution to the ongoing unrest.
"About 3,000 people on the Myanmar side of the border entered Chinese territory to escape the chaos caused by the fighting. Regarding humanitarian considerations, China's local government has made the appropriate arrangements for them -- injured people have been taken to hospital for treatment. We hope Myanmar citizens can return to their homeland as soon as the fighting is over and the tension has eased," said Geng Shuang, spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry.
