IT security "geeks" demonstrate how easy it is to hack your phone at the biannual Geekpwn Hacking Competition in Hong Kong from May 12 to 14.
Geekpwn initiator and organizer Wang Qi believes spreading knowledge of cybersecurity flaws is actually the best way to defend against illegal hacking, which motivated him to found the Keen Team, a crew of cybersecurity technicians.
"Geekpwn projects are very creative, targeting problems people hardly think of. And they are very close to everyday life," said Wang. "At first, some companies didn't understand and objected to the event, but now many support us because they know we help make their products better."
Now the competition is sponsored by technology firms such as Microsoft, Baidu, and Tencent.
"Geekpwn is forward-looking and keeps in pace with the fast development of the Internet and smart technology. It drives research and talent training for the future in areas such as artificial intelligence," said Ding Ke, director of Tencent Security.
