China's first dog cloned by gene editing was two months old on Friday, and the physical index shows that he is in good shape.
Longlong was born to a surrogate mother on May 26. He looks and acts like any other puppy, and is genetically identical to another dog, two-year-old Apple. Like Longlong, Apple was born in a laboratory.
China is the second country after South Korea to master dog somatic cell cloning technology, according to SinoGene, the private Chinese biotechnology company that conducted the cloning.
Two other dogs cloned from Apple were born after "Long Long" in a lab in the Changping District of Beijing. The four dogs look very much alike in appearance, except some small differences in their fur colors.
