Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, on Tuesday invited the wives of heads of delegations attending the BRICS Summit and the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries in Xiamen, southeast China, to a rally in the city aiming to raise people's awareness of HIV/AIDS control.[Special coverage]
The event, held at Xiamen University, was particularly focused on young people. Peng said she hoped it would help eliminate discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.
Peng said the activity will help promote health cooperation among BRICS countries and other developing countries.
Peng and the guests watched an exhibition on HIV/AIDS control efforts in universities and listened to a report on anti-AIDS work.
Thanks to the efforts of Peng, who is also the World Health Organization goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, the campaign on the topic has been conducted at more than 50 Chinese universities, an official of China's National Health and Family Planning Commission said.
The event was held in wake of the ninth BRICS summit and the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries.
BRICS countries refer to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
China, which holds the rotating presidency of BRICS this year, has proposed "BRICS Plus" to invite leaders of five other developing countries -- Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Tajikistan and Guinea -- to the summit for the dialogue.
