(ECNS)--A 16-year-old receives his first haircut, part of a ceremony welcoming him into adulthood, in the remote Basha Miao village of Guizhou Province. Using a sickle, a senior shaves off all the young man’s hair, except for the central part. This piece is left intact to enable the coiling of the hair into a topknot, an essential feature to distinguish the Basha from other Miao tribes. The 2,500-plus inhabitants of Basha are of the Miao ethnic group and are known as China's last gun tribe.
