One teacher and six pupils held a flag-raising ceremony at Shawan Elementary School on Sept. 3, the first day of the new semester. They are the only members of the village school, which is located more than 2,000 meters above sea level in a mountainous area.
It's the only elementary school in Wawushan Township, 100 km from Hongya County. 61-year-old Wu Wanyin, the only teacher, has been working here for 42 years.
