(ECNS) -- The groundbreaking opening ceremony for the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory was held at the junction of Lianggang West Avenue and Zhengjia Road in Shanghai's Lingang Area on Jan. 7.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Shanghai's Deputy Party Chief and Mayor Ying Yong attended the ceremony.
The Tesla factory is the largest foreign-invested manufacturing project in Shanghai's history. Tesla plans to produce 250,000 vehicles a year in the initial phase of production, including Model 3 cars.
The plant will integrate research and development, manufacturing and sales, with a designed annual capacity of 500,000 electric cars at full production.
"We are looking for the very best people to join and help us build a sustainable future for the world," said Musk at the ceremony.
