(ECNS) -- A Shehuo mask-making event has been held at Shandong Art Museum in Jinan, Shandong Province recently.
"Shehuo" is a Chinese term for the blessing from the god of earth. Ancient Shehuo masks are common across China.
Hou Zhixin, the sixth-generation inheritor of Hou Shehuo mask making, taught the necessary skills.
It has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Jinan.
Hou said he received the art edification of Shehuo masks from a very young age.
"My wife and I have been doing this as a career for over a decade," said Hou.
He said mask making steps are very sophisticated.
He has integrated modern aesthetics with Hou Shehuo mask making.
In addition to making traditional masks of Chinese deities, he has created masks of appealing Chinese zodiac animals.
