(ECNS) -- A China-made autonomous cargo ship completed its maiden voyage ferrying goods in south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday.
The cargo ship "Jindouyun 0 hao," or No. 0 Jindouyun, is 12.86 meters long and 3.8 meters wide.
The vessel was initiated at the end of 2017 and delivered this year.
Just as artificial intelligence and autonomy show promise in other applications, it is expected that autonomous ships will operate and make navigation plans after recognizing surrounding conditions and obstructions, said Zhang Yunfei, CEO of Yunzhou-Tech, a participant in the research project.
More testing and exploration will be carried out on autonomous cargo ships for commercial use in transport and ferrying goods.
"Jindouyun," which translates to "somersault cloud," describes the Monkey King's aerial feat in the Chinese legend "Journey to the West."
