(ECNS) -- Shanghai has officially started a stricter ban on single-use plastic products following the implementation of the latest public opinions on plastic pollution control from January 1.
Single-use plastic bags have been replaced by paper bags and non-woven bags in some large supermarkets.
Many catering brands in Shanghai will no longer provide disposable plastic straws.
However, plastic pre-packing bags, rolling bags and freezer bags for bulk fresh food, cooked food and wheat food won't be prohibited due to hygiene and food safety concerns.
Some citizens said they had been bringing their own supermarket bags and showed support for the upgraded plastic products limit.
Some large supermarkets in Shanghai have warned customers about the plastic bag ban dozens of days ahead of the implementation of the new regulations.
Disposable plastic bags used for online delivery orders may be gradually replaced by degradable plastic bags in the future, said a supermarket official.
