(ECNS) -- A video clip of a lion in Xiangyang Zoo "biting its hind leg" has attracted the attention of many netizens.
The zoo explained that the lion had accidentally scraped its right hind leg on the protective netting when pacing its cage half a month ago.
The wounds had nearly healed after treatment.
The lion bit at its wound from time to time.
The strange behavior was caused by the wound itching during the healing process, similar to an acute stress response.
"The 14-year-old lion accidentally hurt itself. During treatment, its wound began to itch. Visitors misunderstand it licking the wound as self-harm. However, it is a type of acute stress response," said Geng Jianqiao, office head of the zoo.
The female lion is still under treatment. A breeder and vet feed it meat filled with medicine.
The zoo has also taken other measures, including disinfecting its wound and the cage, and feeding it anti-inflammatory drugs.
The lion can move about normally now.
