(ECNS) -- The main part of 400-metre-long Tseung Kwan O Cross-Bay Link Bridge was completed on Friday morning.
Kan Jun, chairman of China Road and Bridge Corporation (Hong Kong), said the public was invited to vote for the one selected from six bridge designs submitted in 2010.
In the past 20 years, Tseung Kwan O has developed rapidly, with a population of more than 400,000. However, apart from the MTR, the only land transportation from suburb Kowloon to Tseung Kwan O is the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel.
There is always heavy traffic during peak hours. The HKSAR government has attached great importance to the project, he said.
The construction of the bridge is environmentally friendly as much temporary work on the water has been saved.
Kan said there are many innovations in bridge assembly, which are unprecedented in Hong Kong and even in the world. For example, it is the first bridge that has been installed by "floating method" in China and that has use S690 steel on a large scale in the world. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2022.
