(ECNS) -- An exhibition showing the culture of four ancient Chinese dynasties -- Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang (in chronological order) was opened in Hefei on Tuesday.
Costumes and women's makeup of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) are popular among visitors.
The exhibition has recreated the seven-step makeup routines of Tang women.
It begins with a foundation of face powder, followed by rouge and a dusting of light yellow powder. Bluish black eyebrows are then painted in, an ornamental design either is pasted or painted on the forehead and dimples either added or accentuated.
In order to highlight the contours of the face, Tang women will further add "Xiehong" to their faces, a step to paint two red strokes on their cheeks. Last is applying lipstick.
Tang Dynasty clothing can be classified into four types: the dress for offering sacrifices to gods or ancestors, for having an audience with the emperor, for official business and for daily wear.
All the regulations on clothes colors, patterns and accessories show the hierarchy of the society at that time.
