Xiaogaoling village in Huangyuan county is located in the transitional zone from the loss plateau to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, whose natural conditions including high altitude and low temperature that would affect crop production. From the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, people in Xiaogaoling began to build terraced fields in suitable places to increase crop production.
