Wuyi Mountains included on list of China's first batch of national parks

(ECNS) -- China on Tuesday officially announced its first batch of national parks.

The Three-River-Source National Park, the Wuyishan National Park, the Giant Panda National Park, the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park and the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park are on the list.

Wuyi Mountains, where the Wuyishan National Park is located, play an important role in biodiversity conservation in China.

Covering more than 1,000 square kilometers, the park preserves the world's largest subtropical primordial forest ecological system.

It was listed as the natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 1, 1999.

The park was selected as one of the first 10 parks of China's national park pilot project in 2016.
