(ECNS) -- Initially, the ideal condition is that the immunological barrier would be established against COVID-19 after vaccination, and there would be no more infection and the virus would stop spreading, said Gao Fu, member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, in an interview.
But the goal has yet to be achieved due to virus characteristics, said Gao, also director-general of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
"However, the herd immunity we created through inoculation can prevent severe symptoms and even death. So, it's better for everyone to get vaccinated, especially the elderly," Gao added.
"The most vulnerable populations are the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions. For individuals, vaccination helps prevent severe symptoms and death. And for the general public, it helps build herd immunity. Even if the virus is still spreading, the transmission rate will decline," Gao said.
