(ECNS) -- The water level of China's largest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake, has been shrinking at an alarming pace due to high temperatures and lack of rain.
A large area of beaches and grass has been exposed on the lake. The water area of the lake shrank to less than 1,000 square kilometers.
On Monday, the water level of Duchang Station in Poyang Lake dropped to 10.23 meters according to Ministry of Water Resources.
Due to the continuous high temperatures, the Poyang Lake has been shrinking.
This year is the earliest year that Poyang Lake entered the dry season since the record was made in 1951.
