The Central Axis of Beijing, stretching 7.8 km from Yongding Gate to the Bell Tower, is a great creation of Chinese civilization in urban planning and construction. On August 7, 2022, it was designated as a 2024 World Heritage nomination project.
First seen in the planning and design of Dadu City of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the 700-year-old Central Axis runs through the center of "Old Beijing." The Forbidden City, Imperial Ancestral Temple, Altar of the Land and Grain, Qianmen Street, with other historical and cultural elements, form the unique Central Axis.
To the north, the Axis extends through the Bird's Nest, Water Cube, and Olympic Forest Park, to Yanshan Mountain Range. And to the south, it runs through Daxing International Airport to the Yongding River system. The Traditional Chinese elements of symmetry and harmony are integrated into the modern urban landscape, linking tradition and fashion, and China with the world.
In 2011, the Beijing municipal government decided to "specially protect and plan the capital's cultural bloodline, and strive to include it in the World Heritage List." In 2017, the World Heritage application was written into the "Beijing Urban Master Plan (2016-2035)" and the inscription process has entered an accelerated and critical stage.
Today, the functions of this extended line expand beyond culture to international exchange and ecological protection. Ancient and modern civilizations blend here, and the Central Axis, stretching up from history and carrying the essence of Chinese civilization, will also embrace new vitality in inheritance and innovation.
