Yangtze River Protection Law, the first law on river basin protection in China, took effect on March 1, 2021.
Flowing through 11 provinces, the Yangtze River is the longest river in China, with a total length of more than 6,300 kilometers. Once upon a time, the Yangtze River was seriously polluted. The ecological function of the basin once saw degradation, as evidenced by nearly 30% of major lakes and reservoirs in the state of eutrophication. The Yangtze River has even fallen into a "Fishless" situation.
To revitalize the Mother River, over the past decade, China has gradually formed a set of mechanism and issued a series of policies to promote the ecological protection of the Yangtze River. With all-round efforts to fishery, pollution, and coastal-area governance, Yangtze River has made great progress in ecological environment and hydro-ecological function.
The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China proposed to "enforce the 10-year fishing ban on the Yangtze River", which charts the correct course for restoring the eco-environment of the Yangtze River. In recent years, the water quality and eco-environment of the Yangtze River basin have improved significantly. High-quality water has exceeded 97%of the basin. Some rare aquatic animals such as finless porpoise, cochineal fish, Yangtze sturgeon, and peach jellyfish frequently appear. Now the Yangtze River, our mother river, is thriving with vigour and vitality.
