In October 2022, a China-Europe freight train bound for Poland passed through Horgos Port in Northwest China's Xinjiang. Hence, the number of China-Europe (Central Asia) freight trains passing though Horgos Port reached 10,000.
Launched in 2011, the China-Europe freight rail connects countries of the Belt and Road Initiative. Its annual train trips surged from 17 in 2011 to 15,183 in 2021. With 82 routes, the trains now reach 200 cities in 24 European countries, forming a transport network almost covering the entire continent.
Rail freight transport is environmentally-friendly, cost-effective, fast and reliable. According to the global transport and logistics company DSV, the rail freight from China to Europe is much faster than shipping by sea, and less costly than air freight.
Besides, there are cost-effective door-to-door solutions for rail freight between China and Europe, which makes people's lives more convenient. Fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic together with other countries, China has sent a total of 14,330,000 pieces of anti-pandemic medical supplies to Europe through the China-Europe freight train service, which makes the China-Europe freight rail a "life channel" during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The rail has also contributed to economic development. Trade between China and the EU was worth 586 billion euros in 2020. Overtaking the U.S., China has become the EU's biggest trading partner for the first time.
The China-Europe freight rail, which runs along the ancient Silk Road, has become a new bridge for global connectivity. In the future, it will continue to make contributions to bringing solidarity and prosperity to Eurasia.
