The multidisciplinary team of Wuhan Union Hospital successfully performed a heart transplant on a baby girl who was only 53 days old and weighed 3.9 kilograms, Wuhan Union Hospital announced on Tuesday.
It's reported that the baby girl developed symptoms such as feeding difficulties and mental fatigue on the 24th day after birth, and was diagnosed with severe complex congenital heart disease and noncompaction dilated cardiomyopathy.
A team of experts from Wuhan Union Hospital successfully transplanted the heart for the baby girl on February 26. The transplanted heart was donated by a 7-month-old brain-dead boy with a compatible blood type.
Over the years, Wuhan Union Hospital has continuously set new records for infant heart transplantation. In 2014, the hospital performed a heart transplant for a baby born three months; In 2019, a 66-day-old baby successfully "changed heart" at Wuhan Union Hospital.
