After over 70 years' separation, the ashes of a deceased veteran were brought back from China's Taiwan region to his birthplace southwest China's Sichuan Province by Liu Dewen, head of a community neighborhood in Kaohsiung City, on Monday.
Over the past two decades, Liu had heard many elderly veterans in his neighborhood complain about being homesick. That's how the idea of helping them return home came into being.
So far, Liu has carried the ashes of over 200 veterans back to their hometowns on the Chinese mainland for burial. Therefore, he's called "soul ferryman," shuttling across the Taiwan Straits.
