Known as one of the most famous museums in Berlin, the Pergamon Museum has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1999 because of its special significance.
The Pergamon, which includes the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East, and the Museum of Islamic Art, attracts over one million visitors annually.
Local officials say the entire building will close for at least four years for renovation work. It is scheduled to fully reopen in 2037.
