China's first artificially-bred second-generation female finless porpoise on Tuesday turned one year old in Wuhan, Hubei Province.
The little creature was born on June 27, 2022 at the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Science in Wuhan. She weighs about 35 kilograms and measures 1.1 meters long in length this year.
Tao Tao, the female calf's father, born in 2005, was the first finless porpoise in the world to have been successfully bred naturally in an artificial breeding environment. The Yangtze finless porpoise is the only freshwater subspecies in the finless porpoise family. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the species as critically endangered.
